A cocktail traditionally consists of 5 to 10 hors-d’oeuvres per guest as it often precedes a meal. The "cocktail dinatoire" is a complete meal  which usually consists of a 10 to 12 hors-d’oeuvres, a dinatoire plate and 2 or 3 sweets per guest. You may also add cheese and appetizers or food stations. The hors-d’oeuvres and the dinatoire plate served on a small plate can be easily eaten while standing.
